Yesterday, after my girlfriend left and Ohio State started killing Penn State like Dr. Richardson did Barbaro (too soon?), I decided to sit down and read the comments on MGoBlog's Minnesota Open Thread. I'd first like to say of all the Michigan blogs I've read, they've all been damn good and Brian's is certainly one of the best there is, but in the comments I discovered the true problem with sports: Fans are stupid. Yes my friends, we are. None of us are exempt. Ask yourself, How many times has this been you:
maybe Carr can give us the ol' "we were not prepared speech again."A scant 24 minutes in, before Minnesota had even taken the lead, and already acting like the game is lost. We've all done it. We all know it isn't lost, that games don't work like that, that Michigan is infinitely better than Minnesota no matter how slowly they start. Yet we all do it.
But perhaps my biggest issue comes here...
Why does Moeller still have a job? Oh that's right he's a "legacy" which means lifetime employment.
This was one of several comments about O- Line coach Andy Moeller. (Note: Miami Blue, if you read this, I'm not picking on you... it just happened yours was the first Moeller post I found) Moeller is an easy target: He's a former Michigan player, the son of a former head coach and he's in charge of probably the most under appreciated group on the field. But his record tells a much different story. From his bio at MGoBlue:
Over the last four years, 11 of the last 25 All-Big Ten first team selections along the offensive line have been Michigan lineman. The Wolverines are the only team to have multiple first-team all-conference selections during that five-year stretch... Moeller's offensive line has helped pave the way for a 1,000-yard rusher four out of the last five seasons, twice by 2003 Doak Walker Award winner Chris Perry (2002-03) and a pair of U-M's top 10 season rushing performances from Mike Hart (2004, 2006)...Pretty good stats for this "legacy". Now don't get me wrong, I'm as eager to see Lloyd Carr and his whole regime off the sidelines as anyone. But credit where credit is due, Andy Moeller is pretty good at what he does. But the biggest sin is the fact that, despite the game becoming a route, the fans never changed their tune. Even in victory it was all complaints. Perhaps we should all take Herm Edwards advice and remember: "We play to win the games". Winning is all that matters, not how many the third string running back didn't look perfect so let's go lynch the running backs coach.
Prior to joining the Michigan staff, Moeller spent six seasons on the University of Missouri staff, coaching the offensive line the last three years. During that three-year period, the Tigers ranked among the nation's top 10 in rushing yards per game, and Moeller had three players earn All-Big 12 first team honors.
So in conclusion, fans are retarded... and Go Blue!
